The challenge, plan and execution

We were given 2 weeks notice for a company to move out of head office and then only a week to move into new location 2 months later. Certainly not ideal as you can imagine.

The first thing was to assess how the 60 head office staff were going to work during this period. Most were very unfamiliar with remote working and management were against moving data out into the cloud with such short notice.

Fortunately, we had already migrated the email into the cloud. This hybrid cloud set up meant that keeping the emails live was not an issue during the move.

We immediately identified another office in Bristol some 200 miles away which had a reliable fibre connection of around 100mb. We duly despatched all data and application servers to this location and configured them for this new location. We then set about implementing a secure VPN platform capable of supporting remote workers from both head office and Bristol for this period.

Once the move date and new office location were announced we organised a move back. Internet lines were ordered. Leased lines unfortunately take around 2-3 months, so we had ADSL/FTTC lines installed as a temporary measure. We installed CAT6 cabling throughout and managed to get everything up and running for the Monday morning.

Result

A very happy client and a pat on the back for us as their managed service provider. Whilst we do not recommend this approach to planning any project, we managed to work with the client to ensure minimal disruption at this time.

The many hours of hard work that went into this project were worth it once the favourable outcome was achieved.
